About the Games
- The combined population of Commonwealth countries amounts to 2.1 billion - 30 percent of the world's population
- of which 1.2 billion is in India.
- India will be hosting the Commonwealth Games for the first time. This will be the 19th round of the Commonwealth Games.
- The 2010 Commonwealth Games is going to be largest Commonwealth Games event ever. There are going to be 17 sports and over 285 events. Also 72 nations will be competing against each other.
- Among the participating countries 10 are in Europe, 13 in Oceania, 15 in the Caribbean, eight in Asia, six in the Americas and 19 in Africa.
- Australia is sending 600 athletes and officials - its largest ever contingent in the history of the Games. Scotland has announced 191 athletes will take part in the Games.
- It has been estimated that there are over 415000 daily wage workers working on the projects related to 2010 Commonwealth Games.
- This is the first time tennis will be part of the Commonwealth Games.
- Archery will be played in the Games for the first time since 1982.
- The 2010 Commonwealth Games are going to be the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever and are going to cost the capital more than US $1.6 Billion Dollars.
- It has been predicted that the Commonwealth Games at Delhi will increase the capital’s GDP by 49 percent and that means it will become the richest city in the country followed by Mumbai.
- The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games will be the first games ever to be recognized as “Green Commonwealth Games”.

- The 53,800 sq m Teflon-coated roof, designed by Schlaich Bergermann & Partner is being built at a cost of Rs. 308 crore.
- Taiyo Membrane Corporation supplied and installed the PTFE glass fiber fabric roof.
- 8,500 tones of steel used to make the stadium.
- It covers an area of 100 acres including 23 acres of green cover. New 10-lane synthetic track, synthetic warm-up track, and a synthetic lawn ball field.
- A 150m long tunnel is being constructed for the opening and closing ceremonies.
- Construction done in a way to evacuate spectators within 6 minutes in case of any emergency.
- Nearly 4,000 laborers have worked here in double shift to finish stadium in time.
- It has a two tier seating capacity for 60,000 spectators.

- The baton has been designed by Micheal Foley who is a graduate from National Institute of Design
- It is 664 millimetres high, 34 millimetres wide at the base, and 86 millimetres wide at the top and weighs 1,900 grams.
- The message from the Queen was inscribed in a jewel encrusted box.
- The ability to capture images and sound.
- GPS Technology to track the location of the Baton.
- LEDs that change color representing country’s flag depending on the country where it is.
- Text messaging feature to send message of congratulation and encouragement to the Baton bearers throughout the relay.

- Indira Gandhi International Airport is being modernized, expanded, and upgraded. Costing nearly US$ 1.95 billion, Terminal 3 has improved airport passenger capacity to more than 37 million passengers a year by 2010.
- A new runway is being constructed, allowing for over 75 flights an hour and – at over 4400 meters long – it will be one of Asia's longest.
- The Delhi Metro will be expanded to accommodate more people and boost the use of public transport during the 2010 games.
- At 420 km long, it will be one of the world's longest networks and it will extend to Gurgaon and the Noida area.
- In the two years prior to the Games 2,000 drivers were taught English.
- To prepare for the energy-usage spike during the Games and to end chronic power cuts in Delhi, the government has undertaken a large power-production initiative to increase power production to 7,000 MW (from the current 4,500 MW)
- The Games Village will house over 8,000 athletes and officials for the Games.
- Hotels are also reportedly getting a makeover.
- Reducing carbon emission from game related activity, and conserving water are issues seriously being addressed.
Security 
Installation of digital video walls at the police headquarters will be one of the key measures put in place ahead of the games which will beam real time video footage from across the city and will cover game venues, traffic intersections etc. "Intelligent cameras" will be embedded in the walls of the stadiums to keep a watch on the movements of the people, which will be able to identify unclaimed objects, number plates of vehicles and movements of the people.BE There!
